Any 6-12th grade student residing within the Four Points area of NW Austin and attending Canyon Ridge Middle School, Four Points Middle School, or Vandegrift High School may join our team.
If you are home-schooled at a 6th-grade or higher level or attend a private school you may also join our team provided you live in the Four Points area. If you attend another school that does not have a NICA team, you may still apply to join our team - such applications are subject to board approval on a per-case basis.
When can I sign up?
2023 Season Registration will open in September and remain open through mid-December 2022.
What are the costs per season?
SRMTB Team Dues for the 2023 season: $200/rider. In addition to our team dues, each season riders need to register with NICA ($40/rider) and the Texas League ($50/rider). NICA & League fees will open in PitZone on 10/1 and must be paid before a student athlete participates in SRMTB practices.
SRMTB participates in six races each season. Each (optional) race has a registration fee of $50/rider.
*New for 2023: The Texas League is offering a SEASON PASS for $250 which includes season registration AND registration for all the races in 2023. The option to purchase the Season Pass ends 12/1/22.
Race venues typically charge a fee for parking and camping in the range of $10-15.
Lastly, new riders are required to purchase a team jersey. (If you are returning to the team and have a jersey that fits, you do not need to purchase a new one). Jerseys cost $55 and can be purchased through our Team Store.
Not sure what size? We will have jerseys to try on at our Parent Meeting (riders welcome!) on 10/20/22.
Please note: If your student wants to ride with us but the cost is a hindrance, please email our Team Treasurer, jon@srmtb.org - we can help!
What kind of bike will I need?
A mountain bike is necessary to ride with the team. The wheel size must be 26", 27.5" or 29". If you are new to the sport and would like help in selecting the right mountain bike, please email Head Coach Chris Bahrami at chris@srmtb.org and he will assist you in the process!
What other equipment will I need?
At a minimum, you will need a properly fitted mountain bike helmet. Helmets must be made in the last three years and be free from defects and cracks. Coaches will inspect your helmet to ensure it is safe for you to use and properly fit.
You will need a tire tool, spare tube and CO2 or pump.
We strongly recommend eye protection (i.e. sunglasses or clear-glasses for riding in the dark) and long-fingered gloves.
Mountain-bike specific night riding lights are required (white light on the helmet, red light facing towards the rear) for winter evening rides.
See the Resources link at the top of the page for a few more recommended items. If you go to any Trek Bicycle Shop location and tell them you are a student-athlete on our team they will help you with everything you need.
When does the season run and when are practices?
Our practice season runs from November-April. We practice three times a week: Tuesday & Thursday PM (5:30-7:30pm) & Saturday AM (9-11am). All practices and team events are posted in TeamSnap; you will be added after registration.
* 2023 Season: We are aware that the school time changes for LISD may impact our ability to start practice at 5:30pm. We will make a decision on this closer to the season start when transportation “kinks” have been working out and timing is better known. Stay tuned!
Who will I ride with?
At the beginning of the season, all riders are evaluated by our coaching team and divided into smaller riding pods based primarily on ability. Throughout the season riders may be moved to a different pod as skill levels change. Most pods are comprised of 8-10 riders and each pod will have a minimum of two NICA Certified coaches riding with them.
Does NICA provide insurance?
Yes, please see details here: http://www.nationalmtb.org/wp-content/uploads/NICAInsuranceOverview.pdf
Does the team have a refund policy?
In the event of injury, illness or financial hardship, the Steiner Ranch Interscholastic Mountain Bike Program's Board of Directors will evaluate team dues refunds on a case-by-case basis. Please email dawn@srmtb.org with inquiries.
Please note that any refund requests pertaining to league fees or race events must be requested through the league and not the team: http://www.texasmtb.org/weather-policy/
